“Chateauneuf-du-Pape”

Okay…the room at our Gite stunk awful when we got back from dinner….we survived the night, had breakfast, couldn’t get on the internet, but went for a 65 min jog, which we needed. We packed up and headed for the Pape…Lori’s blackberry went on the blink and then so did the GPS. Nevertheless, we made it to the Hostellerie Chateau Des Fines Roches, essentially a castle, checked in and then walked into the town.

View from the "Castle"

As we were walking into town (and seeing many degustation possibilities), we noticed Famille Quiot…several years ago we’d met Jerome Quiot at a wine dinner at Aujourd’hui, he gave us his card and said to visit if we ever came to this area. With no one at the degustation, we walked upstairs to the office, and they got someone to meet us downstairs in the tasting room. A young man started, and then Jean-Louis Smye came over (in charge of exporting to many countries, including the US), and invited us upstairs to a special tasting, and special it was.

Jean and Ray

After 3 whites, he took us through 7 reds. The whites are excellent, with the Roussane (100%) outstanding. The reds were from different areas and terroirs, starting with Sablet (sand, which Mourvedre loves), to another one not in sand, to Vacqueras, Gigonadas, and then 3 Chateauneuf-du-Papes, which just got better and better. The last 2, their Cuvee Exceptionale, from 2006 and 2007, are outstanding, and we just couldn’t dump. Jean and we took pictures, which we’ll exchange. jlsmyl@jeromequiot.com. We will look into these wines. Jean is a character, and would be fun presenting their wines at Pairings someday. He gave us some names of places to go, as well as an Austalian produce he thinks is fanstastic (Glaetzer – especially the Amon-Ra shiraz).

We then continued our walk through the town, all the way to the top, and then back down and to the castle, for dinner.
