Willakenzie Estate Pierre Léon Pinot Noir

7 Jul

Willamette Valley, OR

This Pinot Noir has a masculine style, powerful and complex with firm structure, but smooth tannins. Floral tones, with cocoa, red cherries and spice.

From Willakenzie:

The 2008 Pierre Léon offers the promise of a long cellar life and a constantly evolving depth of character. It presents aromas of dried cherries, dried rose petals, and sandalwood giving way to juicy black fruits, violets, and eau de vie as it opens. The entry is rich, round, and structured moving seamlessly into a mid-palate full of black raspberries and cassis coupled with dark, musky, and woody tones to produce a long and memorable finish. This wine has the ability to pair well with many foods such as olive-crusted leg of lamb, grilled salmon, or chanterelle risotto. It will improve for the next 3-5 years and age well for 10-12.”

Our Story

Lori and Ray found out many things during their visit to Willakenzie Estate. First, are all the wines are excellent. We had been wow’d by their Pinot Gris, but now add Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Gamay Noir. Notice they specialize in “Pinot’s” of all types, as well as the second cousin Gamay Noir. Second, Willakenzie is sustainable in every aspect of their operation. Finally, Ronnie Lacroute, our tour guide and one of the owners, taught French at Winchester High School in the 80’s. Ronnie has since visited Pairings, and made the Gamay Noir available to us, the only wine store in the US that has the wine (we’re out, but more is coming soon). The Gamay Noir has small production, and sells out from their Tasting Room.

While in the Willamette valley we found the Pierre Léon at several restaurants, and one server described it as his favorite and his “go to” Pinot Noir. That’s quite a tribute, given the large number of excellent Pinot Noir’s in the area.
